Stephen Kavanagh, the UK’s candidate for Interpol Secretary General, shared insights on how AI and machine learning have become indispensable tools in the fight against international crime.

Speaking exclusively to Anadolu, Kavanagh emphasized the transformative impact of AI on investigative efficiency. Interpol, through the use of advanced technologies, has processed vast amounts of data at an unprecedented speed, enabling investigators to establish connections that would traditionally take months or years.

Kavanagh highlighted the deployment of preventative policing models empowered by AI, allowing authorities to proactively identify high-crime risk areas and manage offenders more effectively. Moreover, the integration of AI has facilitated the monitoring of dark web activities related to sex offenders and terrorists, providing a proactive stance against potential threats.

International success against hackers

Interpol’s AI-driven capabilities were showcased in a recent operation involving over 30 countries targeting hackers. The operation, coordinated by Interpol, successfully shut down over 82,000 suspicious bank accounts. Using machine learning, actionable intelligence was generated, resulting in the seizure of nearly $200 million in hard currency and over $100 million in virtual currency.

Highlighting Turkey’s crucial role in the global fight against terrorism, Kavanagh commended Turkey’s recent collaboration with Interpol. The arrest of six suspected Daesh members, wanted by multiple countries through the Interpol Red Notice system, exemplifies Turkey’s commitment to maintaining international security.

The article also shed light on the increasing cyber threats faced by countries, with Turkey being a notable target for industrial cybercrime. Kavanagh emphasized the significant economic impact of cyber threats, urging the importance of robust security measures.

Leadership vision for Interpol

Discussing his candidacy for Interpol Secretary General, Kavanagh outlined his vision for the organization. He stressed the need for an apolitical approach, emphasizing Interpol’s pivotal role in addressing borderless and sophisticated crimes. Kavanagh urged increased international cooperation to combat human trafficking, cyber-enabled terrorism, financial crimes, and environmental theft.

In conclusion, Kavanagh emphasized the importance of anticipating emerging and future criminal threats. He called for closer mutual cooperation and enhanced technical support services for member countries to stay ahead of evolving challenges.

As Interpol stands at a crossroads, Kavanagh’s vision focuses on effective global law enforcement, supporting member countries, and delivering justice in an ever-changing and complex landscape of international crime.
