US and Turkey Launch Talks to Address Deep-Rooted Disagreements

he United States and Turkey are commencing comprehensive talks to address longstanding disagreements and explore possibilities for improved ties. Senior officials from both nations will engage in several rounds of discussions at the State Department, covering a range of topics, including Syria, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, defense cooperation, energy, counterterrorism, and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

These talks, known as the Strategic Mechanism, will set the stage for a meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Friday.

The relationship between the two NATO allies has faced challenges, with issues such as Turkey’s acquisition of the Russian S-400 defense missile system leading to sanctions and its removal from the F-35 program.

While recent visits and discussions have hinted at positive momentum, there are no illusions that these talks will resolve all the ongoing strains. Tough conversations are expected, particularly regarding the way forward in Syria and Turkey’s economic ties with Russia.
