ürkiye’s Communications Director Burhanettin Duran on Wednesday described the failed coup attempt of July 15, 2016, as a “historic turning point” that safeguarded the country’s future and reinforced its democratic path, marking the 10th anniversary of Democracy and National Unity Day.

In a message shared on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal under the hashtag #VictoryIsOurs, Duran said the public’s resistance against the coup attempt remains one of the defining moments in Türkiye’s modern history.

“Under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this epic written through the courage, wisdom and unwavering resistance of our noble nation proclaimed to the world that the national will cannot be held captive by any force,” Duran said.

He emphasized that the determination displayed by the Turkish people on July 15 not only thwarted the coup attempt but also demonstrated internationally that no force could override the will of the nation.

Tribute and responsibility

Duran said commemorating the events of July 15 serves both as a tribute to those who lost their lives and those who were wounded while resisting the coup, as well as a responsibility to preserve the memory of the events for future generations.

“Strong states stand not only because of the resources they possess, but because of nations that protect their history, values and national memory,” he said.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Democracy and National Unity Day, Duran paid tribute to those who were killed during the failed coup attempt and expressed gratitude to veterans who participated in resisting it.

“I remember with mercy and gratitude our noble martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the homeland, and extend my appreciation to our heroic veterans,” he said.
