emocratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar accused US President Donald Trump’s administration of using federal law enforcement to intimidate political opponents after immigration agents raided her Washington, DC-area home on Monday, less than a month before the November 3 midterm elections.
The search, conducted by agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), drew condemnation from senior Democratic lawmakers, who described the operation as a disturbing escalation in the administration’s treatment of political rivals.
The US Department of Justice confirmed that federal agents had executed a court-authorised search warrant but did not identify Omar or disclose details of the investigation. No charges have been filed against the Minnesota representative.
Fox News, citing unidentified sources, reported that the investigation concerned allegations of immigration fraud involving documents submitted by Omar’s late father when she was a child. The allegations have not been established in court.
Omar, who arrived in the United States as a child refugee from Somalia and subsequently became a naturalised American citizen, rejected the allegations and accused the administration of pursuing a campaign of political intimidation.
“I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement,” she wrote on X.
“For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation,” she added.
“I will not be silenced.”
Democrats condemn raid as Trump denies involvement
Omar’s office described the operation as an “unprecedented escalation” and an “outrageous abuse of power”, maintaining that the congresswoman had committed no wrongdoing.
“No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies,” her office said.
Senior House Democrats also condemned the search. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar issued a joint statement calling the raid “deeply disturbing”.
The lawmakers pointed to years of personal attacks against Omar by Trump and his political allies, questioning the timing of the operation just weeks before voters head to the polls.
The raid followed renewed criticism of Omar by Trump, who recently referred disparagingly to her Somali origins during a rally in Tennessee and suggested that Vice President JD Vance and other administration officials were investigating her.
Asked about the search hours after it took place, Trump denied any personal involvement, telling reporters that he had “nothing to do” with the operation and that the matter was up to the Justice Department.
Vance has previously accused Omar of immigration fraud without publicly presenting supporting evidence. During an interview with conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, he discussed conversations with Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller about investigating the congresswoman.
Omar’s office dismissed those accusations as fabricated and defamatory.
The Justice Department has not publicly clarified the scope of its investigation or disclosed whether Omar herself is suspected of any criminal wrongdoing.

Long history of political attacks and threats
Omar, who represents a Minnesota congressional district that includes Minneapolis, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018.
She became the first African refugee elected to Congress and, alongside Palestinian-American Representative Rashida Tlaib, one of the first two Muslim-American women to serve in the House.
A member of the progressive group of Democratic lawmakers known as The Squad, Omar has frequently clashed with Trump over immigration, foreign policy and other political issues.
The president has repeatedly directed personal criticism at Omar, including remarks about her Somali background and suggestions that she should leave the United States.
Omar has previously said that Trump’s rhetoric has contributed to death threats against her and her family.
The congresswoman has also faced physical intimidation. In September, a Minnesota man was sentenced to 14 months in prison for spraying her with vinegar during a January town hall meeting in Minneapolis.
The incident occurred during heightened tensions surrounding the administration’s immigration enforcement operations, when Omar had publicly called for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Monday’s raid comes at a politically sensitive moment for Washington, with Republicans seeking to retain control of Congress in the November midterm elections and Democrats intensifying their criticism of the administration’s use of federal agencies.
While the Justice Department has confirmed that the search was authorized by a court, the absence of publicly disclosed charges or detailed information about the investigation has prompted questions from Democratic lawmakers about its purpose and timing.
Omar, meanwhile, has vowed to continue her political work despite the operation, insisting that the search will not deter her from speaking out against the administration.
