ews of the billionaire businessman who was found dead in his Manhattan cell on August 10, 2019, resonated widely, from the U.S. public to global politics. The effects of his death can still be seen in current politics years later. Above all, Jeffrey Epstein (1953-2019) was a convicted criminal whose guilt had been proven through various court proceedings. He abused young girls and forced them into prostitution.

However, his connections with the political and intellectual elite elevated the case beyond its criminal dimension to become part of a broader global agenda. The emails and evidence he left behind after his death created a butterfly effect in US domestic politics. They became a sword of Damocles hanging over the supposedly untouchable elite, transforming into the number one topic in the political climate.

Epstein communicated with some of the world’s richest individuals, such as Bill Gates, as well as respected scholars considered philosophers of the modern age, such as Noam Chomsky. The cause of Epstein’s death in prison will forever remain a mystery. Although the FBI recently reiterated that there was no suspicion surrounding the billionaire businessman’s suicide, questions will always linger. The aftershocks of this death in the political arena will continue to be felt for some time and will haunt certain individuals like a ghost.

Why have these files been so controversial?

The Epstein case is unique because of the astonishing array of names in the network he established. Epstein appears to have positioned himself at the center of the US establishment network, creating a chain of collaboration with individuals for various identities and purposes. His involvement in global child abuse and exploitation of children and young individuals for prostitution gives the case a sinister undertone. Numerous productions and articles explain how this system operated. The documentary “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich clearly exposes how underage women were exploited within the system. It’s important to note that Epstein’s biggest accomplice in carrying out his diabolical plans was Ghislaine Maxwell. She is another famous name in British-American high society, which is important for understanding the events that unfolded.

Maxwell introduced Epstein to members of New York society and the British royal family, including the disgraced former Prince Andrew. Important note: Maxwell’s father was Robert Maxwell, who was known in the UK for his fraud, malpractice, and boorish behavior. A famous politician in the 1980s, he was also a media and football club owner. It was alleged that he worked for Mossad until his death in 1991. Years later, allegations about Epstein’s relationship with Mossad emerged. His daughter met with them and became a partner in a dirty scheme, pointing to an interesting correlation.

A businessman with ties to many different industries can develop relationships with the elite through his contacts and the system he has established. This interaction evolves into suspicious trips to Caribbean islands, which have now become platforms of fear. The system formed around the exploited women there subsequently becomes a conduit to a blackmail network.

The Epstein rift in the Republican camp

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that he never crossed a certain line with Epstein and has claimed that Democrats are part of this dirty network. Ahead of the 2024 elections, he promised to make Epstein’s much-discussed files public after taking office. However, confusing events occurred at this juncture. Trump claimed after his election that the allegations regarding these files and the information about “client lists” were fabricated. This caused a major backlash among the public and was used against him by his political opponents. It became a vulnerability exploited in his social media feud with his former friend Elon Musk.

An interesting theme here was the sensitivity shown by the U.S. Republican base on this issue, which was unprecedented in any social or foreign policy context. Protests were organized, pre-election promises were recalled, and, when it became clear that there would be a cost in the upcoming midterm elections, Trump was forced to lift the confidentiality of the files.

With Congress passing the bill mandating the files’ disclosure, another threshold of curiosity has been reached. The files will be disclosed within 30 days of the November 19 decision. In the current US political climate, this decision is seen as Trump being forced to back down in a rare reversal. The files were disclosed amid sharp divisions within the Republican Party, with a widening gap between the grassroots and the leadership and members of Congress. Trump’s opponents believed the narrative that he was protecting a sex offender, and public pressure overcame the president’s pride and resistance.

Since the campaign that paved the way for Trump’s second term, the Republican base has embraced the MAGA (Make America Great Again) slogan as its creed. They do not hesitate to show their opposition when there is a shift in focus regarding US interests.

Republicans reveal their true colors when they see structures with a global dimension that conflict with their values. In this context, the Epstein files took on political significance, as the perception that “the interests of the wealthy are protected” damaged the bond Trump had forged with his voters. One manifestation of this fracture was Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation from the Republican Party. Greene is a member of the Georgia House of Representatives and one of Trump’s most loyal supporters. Issues such as Epstein and Israel policy act as barometers of the party’s fragile fault lines, with the U.S. and the average citizen serving as the axis.

The spirit of the times did not allow the Epstein monster

When examining the Epstein case, it is important to remember that the spirit of the times was a significant factor in his receiving the punishment he deserved. In fact, allegations against Epstein had already surfaced by 2008, resulting in a 13-month prison sentence. However, this was before movements such as #MeToo took root, when social awareness was not as high. The conditions of the time allowed for the abuse of women and bullying of the powerful, so the political repercussions of the allegations were not severe. It was especially after the 2018 developments that being associated with Epstein became risky.

Disclosed court documents included the names of prominent figures such as Prince Andrew, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, actor Kevin Spacey, singer Michael Jackson, illusionist David Copperfield, lawyer Alan Dershowitz, and former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson. Ehud Barak deserves a separate evaluation among these names.
