A
ndrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, according to the BBC.
The younger brother of King Charles III was taken into custody following police searches at two properties in England earlier on Thursday. Authorities have not formally named the suspect, in line with standard British procedure, but confirmed the arrest in response to inquiries about Mountbatten-Windsor.
Thames Valley Police said a man in his 60s from Norfolk had been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office and remains in custody. The force stated it would not name the individual at this stage.
Officers carried out searches at addresses in Berkshire and Norfolk. Royal Lodge, Mountbatten-Windsor’s former residence in Windsor, is located in Berkshire. Wood Farm, the house he recently moved to on the Sandringham estate, is in Norfolk.
Earlier media reports said six unmarked police vehicles and around eight plainclothes officers were seen arriving at Wood Farm.
Allegations linked to Epstein files
The arrest follows renewed scrutiny over Mountbatten-Windsor’s ties to the late U.S. financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Earlier this month, Thames Valley Police said it was considering allegations that he had passed confidential government documents to Epstein, according to files recently released by U.S. authorities.
Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein and previously said he regretted their friendship. He has not publicly commented since the latest batch of documents was released.
Mountbatten-Windsor stepped back from royal duties in 2019 amid mounting controversy over his association with Epstein. He later relinquished his military affiliations and the use of the “His Royal Highness” title in an official capacity.
The arrest marks a dramatic escalation in a long-running scandal that has cast a shadow over the British royal family.
