Evangelical communities are booming across Latin America. Where only 4% of Latin Americans identified as evangelicals in the 1970s, today that number is closer to 20%. In this context, the marriage between politics and evangelicalism is more than simply convenient.

“We do not intend to politicize Christianity, but to Christianize politics.” These are the oft-repeated words of Darío Silva, the founder of Casa Sobre la Roca, one of the largest evangelical congregations in Colombia, with over 50,000 members. It is no secret that for several Colombian politicians, receiving Silva’s public support has translated into thousands of votes in electoral districts across the country.

But Silva is not the only evangelical pastor skipping stones across Latin America’s political waters. From Catholic-majority Mexico to Argentina, the growing evangelical vote goes mostly to conservative right and the ultra-right. In Brazil where evangelicals now make up about 30% of the over 200 million population, at least 61% voted for ultra-right candidates including current president Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro, a Catholic himself, has expertly surfed the evangelical wave forging strong relationships with evangelicals.

His wife and child are both evangelicals, and he himself went as far as to be baptized by evangelical rite in the Jordan River in 2016. Bolsonaro was only able to win such a considerable portion of the Brazilian electorate, including the evangelical vote, due to his conservative stances against abortion, the legalization of drugs, and the exclusion of minorities.

But how did the alliance between politics and evangelicalism come about? Are politicians approaching evangelical communities to gain votes? Or are evangelical leaders seeking out politicians to gain power? This symbiotic collusion between power and faith seems like a very convenient marriage after all.

Like most Colombians, former president of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, is Roman Catholic. And yet, the still-politically significant Uribe, has made multiple visits to evangelical temples and participated publicly in evangelical ceremonies like an ordinary parishioner.

Could the millions of votes of the evangelical community in Colombia deliver some miracles?

Evangelicals described him as a close friend of the leading pastors of major congregations with more than 200,000 members. Uribe is accused by an important portion of the Colombian civil society of multiple corruption scandals and of massacres against civilians which he claimed was part of a plan against subversive guerrillas, with no effective legal action taken against him until now.

Given the general mistrust of evangelicals amongst Catholics, the very public pivot of powerful politicians like Uribe towards the evangelical community is significant. Could the millions of votes of the evangelical community in Colombia deliver some miracles?

The biblical account of Jesus Christ’s life tells the story of a revolutionary against the status quo of his time, someone who saw in the oppressed an opportunity to serve, and the possibility of redemption. It would only make sense that politicians and religious figures claiming to follow Jesus’ path would likewise seek to serve the poor and the downtrodden.

But many prominent Latin American evangelicals do not seem concerned with serving the people. A prime example is Jimmy Morales, Guatemala´s former president who left office in 2020 with the country overrun by corruption and scandals that included members of his own family. His most damning legacy, however, may be the impunity he granted to military commanders accused of crimes against their own people.

Despite historical antagonism between Catholics and Jews in Latin America, the Messianic belief that the Second Coming is only possible once Palestine falls under Jewish control drives evangelical political support for Israel.

Many Guatemalans are disillusioned by influential evangelicals-cum-politicians like Morales, who rather than Jesus’ gospel, seem to protect and spread corruption.

Another notable facet of evangelical politics in Latin America is unwavering political support for Zionism. Though many devout Christians would object to the occupation and ethnic cleansing of any people, the seeds of Zionism have flourished in the new Latin American religious movements as they maneuver for political power.

The evangelical conviction that the return of the Messiah will lead to the death or conversion of every non-believer is, however, politically insignificant to the Zionist state, which has welcomed the establishment of Latin American diplomatic missions in recent years.

The separation between Church and State enshrined in Latin American constitutions seems to be eroding as prominently evangelical figures gain greater political power. After the coup against president-elect Evo Morales in 2019, Bolivian politician Jeanine Añez entered the Bolivian presidential palace with a Bible in her hands declaring that “The Bible comes back to Palace.” As the case of Guatemala shows, theocracy, once a foreign concept in Latin America, seems to have become less abstract.

The other defining feature of the alliance between evangelical leaders and politicians in Latin America is of course, money. Churches and religious organizations are tax-exempt in Latin America. There is no way of accurately establishing how much these Christian organizations make yet estimates suggest that in 2015 they made about one billion dollars in Colombia alone. Popular pastors are also known to be extremely wealthy as is the industry of religion, which has been built around them.

Average churchgoers are expected to give at least one tenth of their gross income to the organization. In light of COVID-19 restrictions on congregations, pastors have successfully shifted to electronic channels for tithes and donations. In addition to votes, it seems that politicians also receive monetary support from congregations. The fiscal crisis has forced analysts to reevaluate the wealth of these organizations as a source of potential tax revenue despite the inevitable backlash such measures would cause. A rich Jesus Christ piling up untaxed huge amounts of coins is something we have not heard of, unlike what these Evangelical organizations do.

The role of evangelicals will play in Latin American politics is still unclear especially with the ongoing pandemic and recession. New challenges arise in Latin America, perhaps the most critical in the recent history of the continent. Could the joint venture of traditional politicians and evangelical leaders be able to understand these changes? Maybe it’s about time they try to find answers to the question: What would Jesus do?

The relation among the Bermuda Triangle is just like a hide-and-seek game; while veiling the image of Islam with ‘radicalism,’ it seeks this radical image in order to destroy both the authoritarian regimes in the homeland and white supremacists abroad.

A recent article published by Foreign Policy argues that Arab regimes – particularly, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE – are sponsoring white supremacist rhetoric in the West, and that they are doing this in the name of fighting so-called Islamists. It is argued that what these regimes are doing means to sponsor anti-Islamic sentiments in the West. The close alliance of the above-mentioned governments that form a south-bloc with the Christian Zionists and Zionists is worth noting.

The mentioned article has created considerable controversy with its bold headline and perspective. It basically argues that Arab regimes such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have supported right-wing groups in the West, which promotes anti-Islam bigotry. The article suggests that the reason for this support to Islamophobic groups in the West is simply to fight dissent at home and abroad towards their regimes, which are labelled as Islamist. The critiques of the article and their arguments simply state that it is ridiculous to call Muslim leaders Islamophobes, as they are only fighting the so-called radicals both in the West and at home.

A closer look at the actions of these three Arab regimes – Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, forming a bloc in the region against Turkey, Qatar, and Iran – clearly indicates that these regimes not only contribute to anti-Muslim sentiment in the West, but that they are forming a strong alliance with Christian Zionists and Zionists under the seals of Trump and Netanyahu, at the expense of the interests of Muslims around the globe.

An article published in Foreign Policy argues that Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have supported right-wing groups in the West, which promotes anti-Islam bigotry.

It is not difficult to see the apparent strong relation between the Christian Zionists and Zionists under the leadership of Donald Trump in the U.S. and Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel – which will continue until a foreseeable future. Speaking to The New Turkey, Dr. Andrew Chesnut, Chair of Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, said that the majority of White Evangelicals in the U.S. are Christian Zionists. He added that Pew Foundation surveys show them to be more Zionist and supportive of the Netanyahu administration than American Jews. Dr. Chesnut noted that both Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice-President Mike Pence are Christian Zionist who realize their theological bent through U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.

According to Dr. Chesnut, Christian Zionists tend to be Islamophobes, even though they make some exceptions for some Muslim nations – especially oil-rich ones that are deemed as strategic to the U.S. national interest and are beneficial to policy that is pro-Zionist. He stated that Saudi Arabia is the most important exception to Islamophobia, just as Turkey used to be.

Christian support for Zionism emerged after the Protestant reform process when the idea to support the return of Jews to Palestine was discussed among British Puritans. However, Zionism among Christians was not fully supported until early 19th century when the idea got stronger support with political motivations. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Christian support for Zionism dramatically increased. Today, a majority of Evangelicals (estimated total number of Evangelicals in the world is around 619 million) that emerged under the Protestantism form of Christianity are Christian Zionists.

Speaking to The New Turkey, Dr. Andrew Chesnut, Chair of Catholic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, said that the majority of White Evangelicals in the U.S. are Christian Zionists.

Speaking to The New Turkey, Dr. Ahmed Al-Burai, editor at TRT World and lecturer at Aydin University, said that the regimes of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are not fighting radicals. Rather, these regimes are the creators of radicalism in Islam. According to Dr. Al-Burai, what these regimes are doing is actually creating radicalization that turns into terrorism, which emerges as a result of their despotic authoritarian regimes. Once radicalism grows and is exported, they turn into ‘guardians of western values,’ in their homelands and abroad under the label of ‘moderate Islam.’ He added that some terrorist groups were mainly supported by these regimes.

When we look at the alliance between these members of the Bermuda Triangle – Zionists, Christian Zionists and the south-bloc Arab regimes – in international politics, we can see a win-win situation for both sides to promote radicalism on both sides of the equilibrium.

Radical terrorists who label themselves either Christian or Muslims are in fact two sides of the same coin.

Dr. Chestnut confirmed that the UAE, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia have undeniably forged alliances with rightist Islamophobes in the West due to their shared interests. Underlining the fact that in the particular cases of Saudi Arabia and Egypt vis-à-vis the United States, Dr. Chestnut emphasized that both regimes have been strategic allies of the U.S. for decades.

According to Dr. Chestnut, the recent attack in New Zealand is a clear indication of the equilibrium within the Triangle: radical terrorists who label themselves either Christian or Muslims are in fact two sides of the same coin. Radical terrorists who claim to fight in the name of Islam seek to provoke a war with the Christian West, while Christian white supremacists see themselves as modern day Crusaders and Knights Templar leading the charge against Islam. Radical terrorism on both sides is trying to provoke an apocalyptic ‘clash of civilizations.’

Dr. Al-Burai argues that while radicalism on the side of Islam is seeded by these Arab regimes via their despotic and suppressive rule, anti-Islamic rhetoric is justified with this radicalization process and rises in the West by both Christian Zionists and Zionists with the justification of “fighting radicalism and terrorism.” Headed by Zionist leaders of the U.S. and Israel, Al-Burai underlines that white supremacist rhetoric is attacking Islam.

According to Dr. Al-Burai, what Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE are doing is actually creating radicalization that turns into terrorism, which emerges as a result of their despotic authoritarian regimes.

Editor-in-Chief of Insight Turkey, Muhittin Ataman, argues that the current turmoil in the Middle East owes a lot to the efforts of the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The UAE-Saudi-led coalition has been suppressing the democratization process of the Arab world – first in Egypt, then in countries like Yemen, Libya, Algeria – and supporting authoritarian regimes to resume after the toppling of half a century old despotic rulers.

According to Muhittin Ataman, both regimes, together with Egypt’s Sisi, are giving support to ‘a new projection’ in the Middle East after the illegal decisions of Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the recognition of Israel’s annexation of the Golan Heights, which are both at the interests of Zionists. While Christian Zionists and Zionists are sustaining the Israeli apartheid in the ‘promised lands,’ with a 5 million Palestinian population, these Arab regimes are providing support to this projection by maintaining close ties with Israel and the U.S.

In a recent article published by The New Turkey written by Azzam Tamimi – a British Palestinian academic and political activist – clearly indicates the alliance of the Bermuda Triangle against the interest of Muslim populations. He argues: “Israel is the ally of dictatorship in the Arab world because dictatorial regimes provide it with protection and with a peace of mind.” More, he argues that the alliance between the authoritarian Arab regimes and the Zionist occupation of Palestine has never escaped the attention of the Arab masses, in which Israel was the greatest beneficiary from a situation in which despotic and corrupt elites rule the mass Arab populations.

In other words, Israel was the greatest beneficiary of denying Arabs their basic rights, including their right to democracy. It is not surprising that all parties in the alliance of the Bermuda Triangle – Christian Zionists under Trump, Zionists under Netanyahu, and the south-bloc authoritarian Arab regimes, have all been fearful of any democratic process that will reflect the will of the Arab people.

The relation among the Bermuda Triangle is just like a hide-and-seek game; while veiling the image of Islam with radicalism, it seeks this radical image in order to destroy both the authoritarian regimes in the homeland and white supremacists abroad. In other words, they are trying to destroy the monster they created. This is the fundamental principle of the Triangle.

This is indeed a win-win situation for all actors of the Triangle. For the Arab regimes, the monster justifies their despotic rule at home and prevents any democratic demands reflecting the will of Arab populations in the region. For Zionists, both Christian and Jews, it gives them the right to expand the territory of Israel by force in the lands of Palestinians, while de-humanizing and fighting the Frankenstein they created together with the Arab partners of their projection.

All parties of the Bermuda Triangle are destroying Islamic values of the bleeding Muslim societies in the Middle East and North Africa, and are now attacking them in the West with the rise of White supremacist rhetoric. Islam has invaluable contributions to the well-being of mankind but nowadays has been depicted as a Frankenstein at the hands of despotic Muslim regimes and Islamophobes around the world.

When a glance is taken at the history of Turkey-U.S. relations, it becomes evident that the relations follow a rough course. Even though the tradition of initiating this relation dates back to the Cold War era (1945), one could tell that the contact that was attempted in the 19th century at the last Ottoman period was full of issues. Along with the 1947 Truman Doctrine, Turkey had attracted American attention on a strategic level. As a result of the 1952 NATO membership, Turkey became part of a relation that was going through an institutionalization process on military and political levels.

Unfortunately, since then, cooperation between Turkey and the U.S. has not been exempt from issues. Putting the idea of being exempt aside, it is possible to argue that the course of Turkish-American relations has had direct impacts on Turkish politics. The cause of these issues has been the fact that the U.S. administration portrays Turkey as a passive operator of its own strategies. In other words, the U.S. has considered Turkey as a country to facilitate American foreign policy objectives in the Middle East without hesitation. This consideration has prepared the ground for an interfering character over time. The American interference in Turkish politics, including the facilitation of military-coups and enforcement of a series of unjustified political methods, have resulted in the deterioration of relations between the two countries. Consequently, this situation has given birth to a deep trust problem in bilateral relations. Since 1945, due to a lack of structural change in international systems, the conjunctural crises in Turkey-U.S. relations have been left behind and repaired in one way or another. However, along with the 2003 Iraq invasion, the fluctuations experienced in relations have taken deeper structural forms as opposed to short-term interest discrepancies.

Even though the international system continues to be U.S.-centric, Turkey’s perception of this system, the partial transformation experienced within the system (proliferation of power centers), the change of Ankara’s priorities in terms of its foreign policy, as well as the tensions and fractions experienced in the geopolitical environment involving Turkey make it even more difficult to overcome the crises in Turkey-U.S. relations.

Therefore, it is not possible to take the newly emerged Pastor Brunson crisis out of this context. It is also not quite possible to overlook the new evangelist, conservative and extreme right religio-political identity of U.S. foreign policy that has accelerated under the Trump administration when examining the Pastor Brunson case. More importantly, it is worth noting that the Brunson case is likely to be used for leverage in the upcoming elections by the Trump-Pence duo. The difference between Trump and Pence is also notable here. Trump is very likely to make use of any tools at his disposal to continue his presidency, and this fact is not only limited to Turkey. Trump’s interactions with countries such as Iran, North Korea, and Russia also prove this point. However for the vice president, Pence, this situation contains more ontological reasons. Pence’s expressions, relationships, and foreign policy engagements lie in the heart of evangelist political existence. The cases of Pastor Brunson and Jerusalem both represent a ‘clash of civilizations’ and even a ‘religious-conflict.’ This should be noted as the most significant exposal of the messianic wave in U.S. foreign policy.

The reparation of Turkey-U.S. relations is now more challenging

Today, the crucial pillars of the Turkey-U.S. relations have been weakened, and this makes it even more challenging to overcome the bilateral crises.

The Cold War led Turkey to position itself in the Western bloc under American supervision. However, Turkey no longer positions itself as such. Furthermore, the current international system is no longer unipolar, which enables regional actors to obtain wider impact zones. It is possible to examine the Middle East, where most actors have acquired independent policies apart from American interests to comprehend this phenomenon.

Nowadays, being part of the Western bloc represents nothing but a means of strategic, economic and political engagement for Turkey. Thus, U.S. supervision is no longer seen as necessary when it comes to Turkish foreign policy. More importantly, the Turkey-U.S. relations are now being redefined with factors including anti-Americanism and American-suspicion. From now on, the U.S. is positioned as ‘the other’ of Turkish foreign policy and Turkish state identity. Turkey is no longer an advocate or critic of an American-centric liberal international system, and that is not because Turkey disapproves a liberal world order, but because it is one of those state actors that advocate a fair restructuring.

It is now evident that Turkey and the U.S. have lost intersections when it comes to their foreign policy objectives. The U.S. is reluctant to respond to Turkey’s security concerns, and as compared to the beginning of the 2000s, there is less cooperation between the two states. In fact, due to the cases of S-400s, Jerusalem, Syria, Iraq and Iran, they are far apart regarding opinion. Turkey’s regional foreign policy priorities do not approve American regional foreign policy approaches and generate ‘troubles.’ Iran sets a good example in this regard. Even though Turkey is upset about Iran’s regional policies, and disapproves the Iranian Nuclear program just as much as the U.S., it does not support the harsh American policy towards Iran.

Even though it is possible to argue that the military pillar of the Turkey-U.S. relations, NATO, stands still, it cannot compromise the issues experienced as a whole. Within this framework, it is clear that even more challenging periods are awaiting, and it can be argued that relations between the two can worsen. If Turkey can level up in the international system and increase its share of power through the new system change, it could also fix the asymmetric issues in its relations with the U.S. More importantly, if Turkey has taken the initiative to step out of the Western bloc, it should create a new identity complying with real power capacity and means. The first thing that comes to mind in such a context is the ‘alternative world’ definition. The issue that requires attention is that actors such as Russia cannot replace the U.S., as superpowers. Instead of leaning towards power dilemmas, Turkey should establish its own independent identity. Despite the issues experienced by the U.S., Turkey’s foreign policy practices still carry a transatlantic nature. This character cannot be changed all of a sudden. Therefore, Ankara should be careful regarding reducing costs. It is necessary for Turkey to stand firm against the insistent and menacing behaviors, the country should respond to every single step taken by the U.S. determined to proceed with its independent foreign policy.
