he global ascent of the far right has become an alarming phenomenon, amplified by the distressing normalization of right-wing extremism. From the U.S. to countries across Europe, far right movements have branched out by displaying variation while retaining their core foundations of violence and hatred, and have adeptly aligned themselves with contemporary political issues, exploiting the expansive reach of online platforms to propagate their ideologies.

Right-wing terrorism has swiftly emerged as the rapidest growing and, in some cases, the most prominent domestic security menace, as underscored by the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee—not to mention the far right’s harmful everyday rhetoric towards migrants and people of color.

In the United States, the number of far right extremist attacks has surpassed other acts of terrorism. The reverberations of heinous incidents like the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting and the Christchurch mosque shootings remain indelible reminders of the terror wrought by far right militants. From eco-fascists to white supremacists, this month’s book bundle encompasses various prominent and influential far-right movements.

By examining the complexities of far right ideologies, their metamorphosis over time, and the necessary measures to confront them, this collection presents an invaluable resource for comprehending and engaging with this pressing global concern.

In Spreading Hate: The Global Rise of White Supremacist Terrorism, Daniel L. Byman presents a comprehensive analysis of the global white power movement, its appeal, and the imminent threat it poses. Byman’s authoritative account spans the movement’s evolution in the United States and worldwide, shedding light on its multifaceted nature.

Drawing from a wide array of sources, Byman dispels prevalent myths surrounding white power terrorism and exposes critical deficiencies in current policies. This negligence towards growing far-right terrorism has resulted in shocking acts of violence, corroding trust in democratic institutions. Byman emphasizes that mitigating this threat necessitates swift and resolute action from governments, treating white power terrorism with the same urgency as jihadist violence.

Byman highlights how white power terrorists exploit mainstream debates, amplifying polarization and yielding significant political impact, even if the death toll remains relatively low. Contrary to popular belief, the movement is not entrenched in a rigid ideology: it is dynamic, draws inspiration from global sources and leverages cutting-edge technologies, particularly social media.

While white power terrorists exhibit vulnerabilities, such as internal divisions, lackluster leadership, and attracting not only dangerous and deluded individuals but also the inept and criminal, their potential for harm remains potent.

Mitigating the dangers of right-wing terrorism entail measures such as robust law enforcement, international intelligence cooperation, stringent regulations imposed by technology companies, and other forceful interventions. Byman not only examines policy solutions but also synthesizes extensive scholarly research, making Spreading Hate essential reading for those concerned about an increasingly interconnected movement that in the years to come harbors the potential to escalate in perilousness.

The Rise of Ecofascism: Climate Change and the Far Right delves into the connection between the climate crisis and the rise of the far right, examining their historical roots and contemporary manifestations. By exploring the far right’s evolving stance on the environment, Sam Moore and Alex Roberts reveal a shift in strategy as they come to recognize the impending crisis as an opportunity for resurgence, moving beyond climate denial to conspiracy.

Far right ecologism is brewing within online circles and manifesting as violence on the ground. The authors argue that ecofascism’s dangerous ideology, steeped in hatred is not the answer. Instead, a genuine commitment to climate justice is crucial to combat both the far right and the environmental challenges we face. A must-read for anyone interested in learning about the trend in right-wing extremism or advocating for climate justice, this book offers a powerful critique of emerging ecofascism.

When the Hood Comes Off: Racism and Resistance in the Digital Age is a timely and comprehensive exploration that delves into the manifestations of racism in the digital realm, shedding light on the emerging antiracist strategies deployed to combat it.

Rob Eschmann skillfully weaves together meticulous research and captivating personal anecdotes to uncover how racism thrives online, challenging the notion of a colorblind society. From viral videos capturing police violence against unarmed Black individuals to the exposure of racist messages and hurtful comments on social media platforms, online communication lays bare the workings of racism in our world.

In this thought-provoking study, Eschmann not only examines the impact of online racism on communities of color and society at large, but also uncovers the unexpected ways in which digital technologies facilitate innovative tools of everyday antiracist resistance.

By drawing from a vast array of data, including insightful interviews with students of color and meticulous analyses of millions of social media posts spanning a decade, Eschmann delves into the influence of online communication on face-to-face interactions.

When the Hood Comes Off underscores the internet’s potential as a powerful organizing tool, exposing the transformative power it holds. Furthermore, the book serves as a poignant reminder that online racism can serve as a profound wake-up call, prompting us to reflect on our own responses and actions.

In a world grappling with the implications of pervasive online racism, When the Hood Comes Off: Racism and Resistance in the Digital Age invites readers to contemplate the crucial question of how we will collectively respond to this urgent challenge. Eschmann’s work is a vital contribution to the ongoing conversation surrounding racism and provides valuable insights into harnessing the potential of the digital landscape for meaningful antiracist efforts.

Ukraine’s Azov Movement has emerged as one of the most audacious and perilous far-right movements worldwide. What are its core values and goals? From the Fires of War: Ukraine’s Azov Movement and the Global Far Right is groundbreaking as the first book to be written in English about Azov. Michael Colborne unveils the origins and rapid evolution of the movement, transforming from a militia composed of marginal far right individuals and football hooligans fighting against Russian-backed forces to a multifaceted social movement that has attracted global far-right admiration.

Colborne delves into the intricate mechanisms through which the Azov Movement emerged and adeptly exploits Ukraine’s fragmented social and political landscape, including the ongoing conflict following Russia’s invasion. From the Fires of War astutely reveals the movement’s grand ambitions and the threats it poses.

The Amazighs, usually referred to as Berbers, are native inhabitants of North Africa. Their presence stretches from the Canary Islands of Spain to Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt. Today, they also make up a considerable percentage of immigrants in many countries outside North Africa.

The Amazighs trace their origins to the Libyan tribes that formed strong political entities such as the Garamantes the Gaetulians, and the Meshwesh. The Meshwesh, in fact, annexed Egypt and even installed Shoshenq I as a pharaoh. His lineage carried on for centuries through the 22nd and 23rd Egyptian dynasties (945–720 BC). Apart from this, the Amazighs’ cultural influence on ancient civilizations was extensive as detailed in Greek and Egyptian mythology.

Throughout time, two great powers emerged in the territories where the Amazigh lived: the Phoenicians and the Romans. The Amazighs’ relationships with these two powerful states changed drastically ranging between war, alliances, and cooperation. Yet, throughout the various kingdoms they established, the Amazighs – mainly the Massylii and the Masaesyli – maintained an independent and free will.

The Amazighs, colonialism, and postcolonialism

Due to migration and the unfolding of political events, many Amazighs forgot their language and became Arabized Amazighs. Amazighs speak Darja, the local North African dialect as their primary and mother tongue. North African Darja is highly influenced by the Amazigh language, which is very difficult to understand for native Arabs of the Middle East.

Starting from the colonial era in North Africa, the Amazighs like their African neighbors, lost territory and power to the Europeans, mainly to Spain, Portugal, France, and Britain.

Many other Amazigh groups have kept their native tongue. Such groups include the Chaoui people of eastern Algeria; the Chenouas in western Algeria; the Amazighs of Tripolitania in Libya; the Kabyle people, who are the inhabitants of the historical autonomous region of northern Algeria; and the Chleuh in High Atlas and the Souss Valley of Morocco. Other groups include the Riffians of northern Morocco, the Mozabites of southern Algeria, the Zenata of western and southwestern Algeria, and the Tuaregs of the Sahara.

Starting from the colonial era in North Africa, the Amazighs like their African neighbors, lost territory and power to the Europeans, mainly to Spain, Portugal, France, and Britain. They had to fight long and bloody wars of independence to gain their freedom from colonial powers that created new territorial changes, including the creation of modern Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Tunisia, and Libya.

The Amazighs in post-independent North Africa

Amazighs had to struggle with the newly installed governments in North Africa mainly over linguistic and social issues. For example, in many North African countries, giving Berber names to children was banned. In Gaddafi’s Libya, the regime banned the teaching of Amazigh languages. As a result, many Amazighs joined the Libyan opposition in the 2011 civil war that deposed Gaddafi. Since then, the Amazighs in Libya enjoy more freedom in practicing, teaching, and performing their cultural rights.

In Morocco, the establishment of the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture in 2002 opened the door for the recognition of the Amazigh language Tamazight as the country’s second official language after Arabic.

In May 2002, Tamazight was included as an official language in the Algerian constitution of 2001 following demonstrations known as “Black Spring” organized by Algerian Amazighs.

Both Mali and Niger recognize Tamashaq, the Amazigh language of the Tuareg people, as a national language, and it is studied and used in mass media. In May 2002, Tamazight was included as an official language in the Algerian constitution of 2001 following demonstrations known as “Black Spring” organized by Algerian Amazighs.

Today, in Algeria, Tamazight, along with French and Arabic, is one of the three main languages used in media. In 1996, Tamazight began to be taught as an optional subject in regions where it is spoken. On December 27, 2017, Algeria’s former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika recognized Yennayer, the first month of the Amazigh year, as a public holiday to be celebrated on its first day (January 12) every year.

Amazighs are gaining greater political presence in Algeria and Morocco. Many Amazigh figures reached high positions in the social and political hierarchies. Examples include the former president of Algeria, Liamine Zéroual, and its current president Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the current prime minister of Morocco, Saadeddine Othmani.

In 2019, the Amazighs contributed greatly to the Algerian protests, also known as the Hirak Movement, which resulted in the deposal of the regime of President Bouteflika.

In Algeria today, political parties and popular movements are pushing for granting the Amazighs more rights such as including the Amazigh language as a mandatory language in schools and promoting the restoration of the Amazigh cultural heritage sites. The last two decades have seen an improvement in the political, cultural, and social status of the Amazighs in North Africa, but the road ahead to a full recognition of their rights in still long.

The unification of the Amazigh language and education

To this day, there’s no unified Amazigh language – at least, this is the case in Algeria, where each region claims the use of its local language as the de facto learning language. Academics concerned about the issue are divided between three examples and groups.

The example of the German language where all Amazigh languages become one. The Italian example where one Amazigh language is taught in all regions, and thus the other languages fade away and in time merge with the new de facto official language. And the federal example, where each region keeps its local language.

The main issue, however, in introducing the Berber language to the school system is the alphabet as there are three suggested systems to write Berber texts. The first is Tifinagh, the Amazigh alphabet system, which is still widely used in the Tuareg region. This very old alphabet is found throughout North Africa’s old inscriptions and ruins.

Today, it has been developed and made official by local authorities. It is widely used at facilities such as schools, post offices, and banks, yet some scholars argue that it is not practical and that is hard for new learners, who, instead of learning a new language, have to go through learning a new system instead.

The second suggested writing system is the Latin alphabet which is used mainly in the Kabylie region, east of Algiers. Mouloud Mammeri (1917-1989), an Algerian scholar, linguist, anthropologist and writer, worked extensively on the Latin system and adapted its letters for a practical writing system of the Amazigh language. This approach is widely used in modern publications at higher education institutes and, mainly, at universities.

The third proposition is the use of Arabic. This proposal is backed by the long history of the Amazigh people with the Arabic language. The Arabic alphabet was used under Amazigh Muslim kingdoms, especially in religious scripts, and Amazigh groups whose second native tongue is Arabic, like the Ibadi people in Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, support this suggestion.

Amazighs and contemporary politics

In spite of the recent positive developments, certain Amazighs seek independence or at least some type of self-governance in the form of a federal system. An example is the Movement for the Self-determination of Kabylie (MAK) which was formed in 2001. Kabylie is a region in the east of Algiers which contains the largest Berber-speaking community in North Africa. In Kabylie, opinions differ as to whether it is more beneficial to stay as one united country or if becoming independent will open the doors to more prosperity on both the individual and state level.

Recent years have seen an increasing involvement of Amazighs in North African politics. Despite improvements, the Amazighs are still fighting for their cultural rights. For a more stable North Africa, governments should recognize the political, cultural, and social rights of the Amazighs who have been living in the region for thousands of years.

The French Muslims are afraid right now. Politicians, intellectuals, and the media are incessantly speaking on them. This phenomenon is unfortunately an epitome of cultural racism. Of course, many French people are ashamed of this, but their voices are muffled amid the chaos.

In the present day, it is hard to believe in scientific racism. It is not so easy to support such theories as was done so in the past. According to a case study conducted 5 years ago by the Science Po European Studies Center based in France, only 8% of the French public believe in White supremacy. Also, unlike the past, present day intellectuals and politicians do not sell the idea of a “civilizing mission,” which is nothing but colonization. There is a saying that everything has a cure except for death, and today, instead of anachronistic scientific racism, a modern version of racism that has the potential to be backed by almost the entire political spectrum is on the rise.

This modern day racism is called “cultural racism,” which is based on marginalizing groups and cultures that are different from the dominant culture. Some call this “new racism,” but even during the time of scientific racism, it was prevalent to suggest getting to know other groups and civilizing them through indoctrination, which has been a practical view since it’s easy to build a rhetoric through that. This approach does not directly classify the other as superior or inferior, but they assault alternative lifestyles encountered in society with slogans such as, “This land is ours, so our values operate here.” The National Front embraces the slogan, “France belongs to the French,” whereas a number of right and left-wing groups contend that others should only be entitled to citizenship as long as they are assimilated to the dominant culture.

Instead of anachronistic scientific racism, a modern version of racism is on the rise. It is called “cultural racism,” which is based on marginalizing groups and cultures that are different from the dominant culture.

Today, the main target of such attacks are not the Jewish people, like they were some 70 years ago. Weighed on by the shame of the Holocaust, the West is now using all means to appeal to the Jewish community. Former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, who is known as an Islamophobe, even wore a kippah to create a positive impression among the Jewish people. On the other hand, the cultural racism against Muslims and the discrimination related to this are condoned. On top of that, Islamophobia is utterly visible in upper classes, especially among state authorities and intellectuals. They restrict the freedom of Muslims with verbal or written declarations or practices that are adorned with rhetoric depending on the context, let it be secularism, gender equality, or republican values. Since men are not obliged to wear the hijab in Islam, Muslim women constitute the first targeted group.

Two years ago, women wearing burkinis were arrested on a beach in France. In another incident, two ministers stated that they were shocked when they saw a young women, who was a student’s union leader, wear a hijab. Another original manifestation of this authoritarian gaze into Muslims has occurred lately. The state went on a rampage for a sports hijab launched by a retailer. When Decathlon attempted to launch the hijab produced for Moroccan women in French sports, they faced a tremendous reaction and therefore decided to discontinue the product.

The company’s statement read: “Our store teams have been insulted and threatened, sometimes physically. Since this morning, we have been facing an unprecedented wave of insults.” More gravely, this fear was not fueled by Marine Le Pen or her party’s militants. Aurore Bergé, the spokesperson of President Emmanuel Macron’s Party La République En Marche(!), was among the first names showing reaction to the product. Stating that the brand must be boycotted, Bergé said: “My choice as a woman and citizen will be to no longer trust a brand which breaks with our values,” adding that they are accused of racism and Islamophobia when they express their opinions, as in the burkini case.

Those siding with Bergé fanned the flames by saying that this cannot be racism since there is no race born with hijab! Socialist Party Parliamentary Group Chair Valerie Rabault also called for a boycott against the brand, while the French Minister of State for gender equality Marlène Schiappa said that the product is a promotion of political Islam and proves that religion controls everything. The Republican spokesperson Lydia Guirous claimed that the brand submits to the type of Islamism that ensures women’s submission, while some parliament members said that the sports hijab is a promoter of sexual apartheid.

It wasn’t Marine Le Pen or her party’s militants that fueled fear in Decathlon after the company launched a sports hijab. Rather, it was individuals such as Aurore Bergé, the spokesperson of President Emmanuel Macron’s Party La République En Marche(!)

The articles and statements of every politician that begins with the words “our values” imply that their civilization and values are absolute and superior, so the other has to submit to them. They shout: “We do not want to see you in any sphere of life, including education, professional life, sports and arts. We do not even want to see you at the gates of schools as parents waiting for their children. You should be afraid.” The French Muslims are afraid right now. Politicians, intellectuals, and the media are incessantly speaking on them. This phenomenon is unfortunately an epitome of cultural racism. Of course, many French people are ashamed of this, but their voices are muffled amid the chaos.
